Donnywood students' movie earns plaudits

DONNYWOOD'S latest production is setting the world of film alight - even though it is the work of a team of amateurs.

It may have been put together on shoestring, but the film Saviour has already won plaudits in the industry and an award nomination.

The 10 minute low-budget film, put together by a group of students from Doncaster College, was developed through improvisation and shot in the Peak District in July.

It features National Diploma in Performing Arts student Rhona McRobbie, from Doncaster and Digital Performance degree student Cheryl Boothe, from Belle Vue.

MA Digital performance students Michael Dunn and Rachel Rollin wrote the score and produced the film respectively while tutor Grant Bridges and technician Gareth Welbourn also worked on the film.

The plot is loosely based on two girls becoming friends after one of them tries to commit suicide.

Although it may be a million miles from the world of top directors like Stephen Spielberg and the Coen Brothers, the film has already made an impact in the amateur world.

It has been shown on the satellite station Propeller TV, on Sky channel 195, after it was shortlisted in its Drama category of Best European Student Film.

Student Michael Dunn said: "I am really chuffed that it's been shortlisted for this award. It's great that all our hard work has paid off and someone has noticed it.

"The film requires a degree of interpretation but it is generally about two girls, one who tries to kill herself and one who stops her. They get talking, become friends and a lot of history comes out during the film."

Fellow student Rhona McRobbie, said: "It's a great compliment to know that a film I've acted in has been shortlisted for a European award - that is an achievement within itself.

"It was a pleasure working with Grant throughout the process of creating the film and also Cheryl who I acted alongside. Right up to the very end, being able to watch the finished product of Saviour on screen brought it to life, I feel very proud to be a part of this project."

More details of music in the film can be found at .indiestore.com/michaeldunn. Winners will be announced on Propeller TV on Thursday March 27.
