Doncaster Race for Life - SLIDESHOW
NEARLY 5,000 women from across Doncaster took to the streets – and struck a blow against cancer.
The women all took part in this year's Doncaster Race for Life event – and were hoping to raise 170,000 between them at the annual event.
The 5km run at Town Field was split into two sessions, with 3,000 taking part in the morning and another 1,800 pounding the circuit in the afternoon.
Among those taking part this year was battling Misson schoolgirl Megan Kershaw who only a year ago was in a hospital bed battling a rare former of cancer herself.
She decided to take part in the race in memory of a girl she met while she was receiving treatment herself, who died aged just three.
Megan took part with sister Bronwen and her 83-year-old aunt Eileen Reaney.
The race is a major fundraiser for Cancer Research UK.
Doncaster regional events manager Alison Cook said the women inspired and motivated each other to complete the course. Many walked rather than ran the course.
In all, 680,000 women are expected to take part in the Race for Life events across the country.
Alison said: "The number taking part in Doncaster is up on last year. Each year we seem to get more and more people, so we're really pleased.
"We're delighted with the response we've had here. The morning race was full within two weeks of us announced the date, so that was really fantastic."
