Defiant Nic will keep selling beer in litres

POLISH restaurant boss Nic Davison has vowed to keep selling beer in litres - after the passing of a Doncaster Council deadline for him to stop.

Mr Davison, who runs the Kuchnia Polska restaurant next to Doncaster Market with his Polish partner Dr Krystyna Ciurai, was served an infringement notice by trading standards officers for selling beer in litres rather than pints.

But today he remained defiant after the 28-day deadline imposed on July 24 to switch to pints passed with no action taken by the authority.

The 26-year-old accountant from Toll Bar said: "No-one at the council has been in touch with me over the matter and I am still serving from half litre glasses.

"I'm hoping this now means it will be the end of the matter. We're hoping they've realised it's not in the public interest to prosecute us."

He insisted: "I think they have got it wrong and as far as I'm aware there's never been a prosecution for someone serving metric measures, and I think if they went to court they would lose.

"I've got the backing of the Metric Martyrs group and they will help with legal costs if it comes to it.

"I've had a lot of support on this issue, both from Doncaster councillors and the general public. I've even had people coming in saying they want to drink from an illegal glass - they think it's ludicrous.

"This law is silly, daft and incongruous with common sense."

Mr Davison serves beer from a Polish brewer, which also supplies the glasses in small and large sizes of 0.3 and 0.5 litres. He said he had received no complaints from customers about the measures.

Jane Miller, Doncaster Council director for neighbourhoods, has stated that in the UK free flow beer must be sold in stamped pint or half pint glasses to ensure consistency all over the country.

The council has said it wants to help Mr Davison and was providing help and advice.
