Council homes system shake-up
A NEW system to allow people to apply for council homes in Barnsley has been launched.
Berneslai Homes, the company responsible for managing council houses in the borough, has launched a new Homeseeker service which aims to improve the way homes are let.
People who applied for a council house or a transfer were only notified about vacancies in the area they wanted to move to or suited their criteria.
But now all vacant properties will be advertised every week on Berneslai Homes website and in all Barnsley Connects Services Centres.
There are currently about 6,700 applications for re-housing – but only 1,200 empty council properties a year.
Berneslai Homes chief executive Helen Correy said: "We had to address this issue and improve the lettings service in Barnsley.
"We can't rehouse everyone on the housing register, so it's vital people have good quality advice and information about their rehousing options.
"We also need to be open about our vacancies and how we have let them."
