Classic aircraft replicas mark air display first with return to racecourse

REPLICA aircraft were today returning to the place where Britain's first air display was held in Doncaster 100 years ago.

Items have been wheeled out at Doncaster Racecourse courtesy of the Yorkshire Air Museum, for an exhibition being held for hundreds of school pupils across Yorkshire.

More than 1,000 youngsters were due to touch down at the venue today for the event, which involves schools from Doncaster and further afield.

It is an education and skills day marking the country's first air display in October 1909, which was held at the racing venue.

It is one of a number of exhibitions to mark the centenary. Doncaster Museum is also running a themed exhibition this year, starting this month and running until November.

The historic show of 1909 at the racecourse was only the world's second ever aviation display, following a similar event in Rheims, in France. All the world's leading aviators were present.
