Children's author thanks Doncaster schoolkids - VIDEO

DELIGHTED children's author Derek Landy has written a personal thank-you to Doncaster youngsters for handing him his first award.

He has contacted organisers of the borough's Children's Book Award for naming his novel Skulduggery Pleasant as the winner of the fourth annual competition.

Top authors Alan Gibbons and Carrie Bright attended the presentation event after being shortlisted, and pupils from Armthorpe Tranmoor School put on a drama performance at the event, but it was Mr Landy who took the top prize.

In a message to borough youngsters he said: "I'm not very good at winning things. I haven't had much practice, you see. I won an art competition when I was eight, but when I was 16 I only came second in a short story competition.

"The Doncaster Book Award is the first thing I've won since I was eight, and it's the first award for Skullduggery Pleasant.

"Doncaster is now top of my Places I Have to Visit list, so I hope I'll get to see you all soon."

- Doncaster College students Phil Carling, Michael Avis, James Payne and Kai Foster filmed the awards event at Doncaster Civic Theatre. Click on the green icon above to see their video.
