Centre's new-look path to health and fitness

A GYM in Doncaster is to change its name as it becomes one of the first places in the UK to offer a new-look health club of the future.

The former Cannons in White Rose Way is to be re-branded as a Nuffield Health Fitness & Wellbeing Centre and will offer services that have never before been available at a gym or health club.

It will provide an holistic and joined-up approach to managing health and wellbeing by offering a combination of fitness facilities, health services and highly qualified staff never before seen under one roof.

For the first time ever, health assessments, usually the reserve of a specialist clinic, will be available in a health club environment.

Known as the Vi1, this comprehensive 60-minute health assessment will be available free of charge to all clients.

The Vi1 will measure body mass index, aerobic fitness, resting heart rate, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels. Clients will receive a written report which will contribute to a personalised action plan and fitness programme.

In addition, the traditional fitness instructors are being retrained as highly skilled 'wellbeing advisers' who will carry out the Vi1 health assessment and be on hand to deliver support, advice and tailored exercise programmes.

Nuffield will also offer physiotherapists to personalise an action plan for prevention, intervention and rehabilitation of injuries, plus nutritional advice, relaxation zones and health workshops.

The new Doncaster centre follows last year's acquisition of Cannons Health Clubs by Nuffield Health – an organisation which helps millions of people take care of their health through its hospitals network.

Manager Ian Parkin, said: "All the staff are really excited about the opening of the new centre - it is the first of its kind and will make a real difference to the way our clients take care of them-selves. For the first time, people can really start to take their health and wellbeing into their own hands."
