Cash honour for sports-mad Dean
SPORTS student Dean Morgan made a trip to Westminster to receive a prestigious £1,000 bursary from the Helena Kennedy Foundation in the House of Lords.
Dean, from Scawsby, is currently studying Sports and Exercise Science at Doncaster College's Hub campus but is hoping to progress onto an undergraduate course at University Centre Doncaster and start his own kickboxing classes to get kids off the street.
Dean, who admits he has had a problematic past, was one of only 23 people to receive a bursary from the Foundation, which supports disadvantaged students from the further and adult education sectors, this year.
He said: "It was a really weird experience. A lot of the other people receiving bursaries were going to Oxford and Cambridge Universities but I am really proud to come from Doncaster and to be studying in Doncaster.
"I am really grateful to the Foundation. It means I can buy textbooks and proper learning materials now.
"My main aim still remains to set up kickboxing classes and eventually a kickboxing team in Doncaster.
He is also currently helping to coach other college students as part of the innovative Fresh Start programme and is hoping to progress some to competition standard.
