Campaign over private foster caring

THE children and young people's department at Doncaster Council is promoting the role and responsibilities of private foster care in the borough.

The department wants to spread the message that the local authority needs to beinformed about living arrangements.

It must know when a child or young person who is under 16 - or under 18 if they are disabled - lives with somebody other than a parent or close relative for more than 28 days.

If they do, this becomes Private Foster Care arrangement.

The council said it needs to know about them to ensure that children and young people are safe and being properly looked after.

The authority says it needs to be on hand to provide advice, guidance and support to private carers.

Andrea Milner, Doncaster Council's cabinet member for the children and young people's service, equalities and cohesion, said: "There are many reasons why children are looked after by somebody else.

"Often these living arrangements are far better for the child or young person concerned.

"We would not wish to change it, but we do need to know about it.

"I ask, urge and encourage anyone who has a child being looked after by someone else, or those people looking after somebody else's child, to please get in touch."

Call 01302 737777 to notify the council of child care arrangements.
