Bus rolls up to help youngsters stub it out

A STOP-SMOKING bus has rolled into Doncaster to encourage smokers to kick the habit.

NHS Doncaster's Children, Young People and Families Stop Smoking Service visited The Hub at Doncaster College, ahead of No Smoking Day next Wednesday.

Stop Smoking Advisers were on board to offer useful tips to smokers on how to quit. Students at the college were also able to see how smoking can affect their appearance with state-of-the-art age progression software.

The software takes a facial photograph, then generates a computer image of what that person will look like in the future based on whether they smoke or not.

Carbon monoxide testing was also available to show people the damage smoking can cause to their internal organs.

Stop Smoking advisers will be in the foyer at Doncaster Women and Children's Hospital at Doncaster Royal Infirmary tomorrow and outside Primark on Market Place between 9.30am and 4.30pm on Wednesday - national No Smoking Day.

Posters featuring handprints from local nursery children will be on display with the message "Doncaster children say high five to giving up smoking."

The stop-smoking bus will then visit Story Book House Children's Centre, in Denaby, on April 14 and the Women and Children's Hospital on April 19.

Smokers will also be encouraged to sign a pledge to have a totally smoke free home. NHS Doncaster's Smoke Free Home project, which runs until March 2011, has been launched to benefit children and non-smokers living in smoking households. Special Smoke Free Home packs will be sent out to those who sign a pledge to go smoke free.

Spokeswoman Tracey MacDonald said: "No Smoking Day is a great time to quit smoking. There's lots of non-judgmental help and support on offer and smokers are four times more likely to quit with NHS support. Our help and support can help people give up and we can offer Nicotine Replacement Therapy to anyone that wants to use it."
