Brothers jailed for attack

TWO brothers have been locked up for a vicious assault in Doncaster town centre which was captured on film and shown to the court.

Elvis Aaron Walker, aged 21, and Daniel James Walker, 20, were both jailed for six months for attacking a man who was involved in a long-standing feud with their father.

CCTV footage played to the judge at Doncaster Crown Court showed them chasing Robert Thorndyke down Silver Street in the early hours of July 7 after a chance encountere outside Flares on Hallgate.

Chris Cooke, prosecuting, said there was some "background" between the defendants' father and Mr Thorndyke, which the victim had refused to go into detail about but was the only motive given for the assault.

Elvis caught up with Mr Thorndyke first and then Daniel knocked him to the ground and punched him.

"It was a sustained assault with punching to his lower body and kicks to his head," said Mr Cooke.

The CCTV of the assault showed Mr Thorndyke being held up against a shop window and repeatedly punched by Elvis but the brothers ran off when police arrived.

Daniel gave himself up but Elvis was sprayed with pepper to subdue him and smashed a window of the police vehicle taking him to the station.

Both men admitted being very drunk and having drink and anger problems but had no previous convictions.

Elvis, of Thorne Road, Doncaster, and Daniel, of East Avenue, Woodlands, pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm.

Tim Savage, defending Daniel, said he had significant drinking problems as a child and was brought up in an area where beatings were common.

Richard Sheldon, for Elvis, said there had been a long history of ill-feeling between the complainant and their father and it was not a random attack.

"It was an isolated piece of stupidity which could have led to something much worse but thankfully didn't."

Recorder Neil Davey QC, sentencing them, said it was the type of offending that needed to be deterred because law-abiding citizens were horrified at seeing drunken yobs kicking people in the street.
