Bike ride in memory of charity fundraiser

RELATIVES of a Doncaster charity fundraiser, who died from the disease he did so much to fight, will be on their bikes at the weekend to continue his work.

Tiggy Kusznir, a maintenance worker at Moorland Prison, lost his fight against non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in May 2007 aged 55.

The dad-of-two, whose real name was Richard and who was originally from Misson, had raised thousands for Leukaemia Research by taking part in bikeathons before being diagnosed with cancer himself.

Two years after his death his widow Pauline and eldest daughter April, aged 31, are getting on their bikes to raise cash for the ward where he was treated at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. They will be raising the money on Saturday in a sponsored cycle, the sort of event Tiggy spent so much time taking part in.

It will be the second time the family has completed what they have dubbed the Tiggathon organised in Tiggy's memory. Last year the event raised 5,000 for Ward 27 at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, where the cash was used to buy electronic beds.

Pauline, 53, from Scrooby, said: "This will be the second time we've done the event. We decided because he was in isolation at the DRI for a month that they needed our help.

"I think Tiggy would have approved."

The 22-mile round trip will start at The Angel Inn in Misson, travelling via Austerfield, Finningley and Blaxton, and will stop at 14 pubs along the way, collecting donations from staff and customers.

Meanwhile, another keen Doncaster cyclist has just raised more than 600 for the Parkinson's Disease Society.

Car firm manager Stephen Eyre swapped four wheels for two and raised more than 600 by cycling 58 miles in the Brigg-to-York leg of the Land's End to John O' Groats race to help fight the disease which affects his aunt.

Stephen, who heads up Perrys Vauxhall dealership on Wheatley Hall Road, Doncaster, said: "It was a tough ride but it was well worth it - we all need to conquer personal challenges now and again.

"I'm just happy I was able to complete the course and contribute to such a worthy cause - thankfully it wasn't the entire leg from John O' Groats to Land's End! I'd like to thank everyone who sponsored me, it means a great deal."
