Sheffield Hallam English student Melissa Boland, a marketing volunteer at Sheffield Hallam Union and city firm Keep Your Fork, reveals her best and worst beauty buys...

HIT: M.A.C Red Lipstick, £15, Debenhams, Meadowhall

I have found my perfect lipstick; one that doesn’t fade, leave a sticky pout on my wine glass or drain all the moisture from my lips. The shade that made M.A.C famous is the favourite in my ever-expanding M.A.C. collection. My theory is, when feeling tired or looking drained, this lipstick is the solution.

MISS: Nivea Visage Refreshing Facial Cleansing Wipes, £1.48, Superdrug

There is no better feeling than taking your make-up off at the end of the day - until you use Nivea make-up wipes. In the battle of make-up versus wipes, my makeup came up trumps. They are definitely a no-go as far as I’m concerned.

JO RECOMMENDS: CLEAREARS, £5.10, Boots, Superdrug

Okay, so these are neither cosmetics nor toiletries, but if you suffer with water in the ear after swimming or washing your hair, like I do, these are essential little beauties. The world’s first water-absorbing ear plugs are made of foam so thy are soft and safe to use. I pop them in after a shower and they soak up any water that has gone into the ear canal within 10 minutes. Once you’ve worn them out, they can go in your potted plants to hold moisture in the soil.
