Be proud to celebrate today
TODAY is the country's first National Armed Forces Day, which makes it a particularly appropriate time to pay tribute to the South Yorkshire men and women who are members of the Royal Horse Artillery and preparing to leave for service in Afghanistan.
The delightfully titled Chestnut Troop comprises 350 soldiers, a quarter of whom come from this county. That represents a sizeable number of local servicemen and women who are to be stationed in what must be one of the most dangerous countries in the world at the moment.
We know they will all do their duty with honour and dignity and they deserve the unwavering support of the people from this area, as do all of our armed servicemen and women.
They're prepared to place themselves literally in the firing line through sense of duty. That is true courage and should be recognised as such.
Please mark this day, the nation's first Armed Forces Day, as a celebration of all our men and women in all the services. And, in particular, we are sure you will send the 'Young Chestnuts' to Afghanistan with your best wishes.
