ASIDELINES: Pete's drinking passage to India

ALL this hot weather makes you want to drop into your local for a glass of IPA.

Barnsley-born beer writer Pete Brown had to travel a bit further for his - 18,000 miles by sea to India.

It gave him the basis for a new book, Hops and Glory: One Man's Search for the Beer that Built the British Empire, which he launches at the Devonshire Cat on Wellington Street, Sheffield, on July 9. It's in conjunction the Wombwell-based Barnsley Brewery, which has made over 30 IPAs in the last two years.

IPA stands for India Pale Ale, the beer brewed to supply the British Raj.

For the book Pete took a keg of unfermented Burton IPA all the way to India by canal and tall ship.

Tickets cost 1 in advance from the pub, redeemable on the night against book or beer.

Incidentally, rival local brewers Thornbridge are bringing out an IPA of their own, Seaforth, named after the second ship to take the beer to India.

Pint of breast!

PERHAPS a glass of IPA will cool down the male office workers on Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, getting rather hot under the collar recently.

They've been having a grandstand view of a girl sunbathing topless on the balcony of one of the Wards Brewery flats, with the best view from the drinks machine by the window.

Bags of fun

YOU thought you might enter the Sharrow Fringe Festival's bag art competition but never got around to it? Well now you have bags of time.

There were so few people entered that the organisers have postponed the deadline until July 16. Collect a free bag from Cafe Euro on John Street, the Old Sweet Shop on Nether Edge Road or Coop on London Road and design it how you like. The winning design will be exhibited in local shops.
