ASIDELINES: Paint - and write - by numbers

YOU know how it is, the older you are the busier you get? Tell that to artist Brian Lewis, aged 73.

Be in Barnsley town centre next Tuesday and you can watch him paint 73 paintings in 24 hours.

His pal poet Rob Hindle, aged 46, will be writing 46 poems while community activist Helen Mesezaros, who is 42, will be penning 42 letters of complaint.

Get the picture?

They're members of The Rivers Movement and will produce a number of artworks governed by their age.

"Last time I tried a similar task I was 70 . . . I managed 65," says Brian.

There's a whole bunch of them including artist Jack Aston-Booth who will be painting 23 birds affected by climate change. Guess how old he is.

You can find them on May Day Green in a gallery called Emergence Pod One, a former shop.

Among the other artists is local picture framer John Cowan, aged 50, a man 'incensed by the flood of Chinese frames into the UK'.

He will frame 50 pictures and plans to sell them the following day.

Just in case you ask, the Diary is not producing 63 columns . . .

Feeling spooky!

SPRING'S a bit late this year so there's still time to feel spooky in the cold winter nights.

It'll certainly be that at the Riverside on Mowbray Street, Neepsend, next Thursday, when acoustic duo Tina McKevitt and Matt Hegarty team up with storyteller Raymond Greenoaken to reprise last year's Off The Shelf performance of Drawing up the Dark.

The pub is now owned by Point Blank Theatre which plans a series of regular events.Tickets cost 3.
