ASIDELINES: Heartbreak for picnic rivals

THE play may be the thing but the picnic comes a close second at Heartbreak Productions' performances in Sheffield's Botanical Gardens.

It can get very competitive when you lay out your spread for there's a definite edge of one-upmanship.

Those who have raided the shelves of Waitrose or Tesco don't earn many brownie points.

Instead, the party next to the Diary at a performance of As You Like It last week, won hands down. Their magnificent fish platter looked as if Loch Fyne had opened a branch in the park. It was followed by a magnificent fruit salad.

Which made the Diary's eco-friendly plates made from Indian leaves look very much second best.

Actors also have to cope with things you don't get in the ordinary theatre.

A chap popped his champagne cork very loudly in the direction of the stage on the opening night that it halted an actor in full flow.

Property deal for the new BNP!

SOMETIMES a change of name isn't for the best. Take what's happened to local property advisers Atisreal.

They've taken the name of their parent company so become BNP Paribas Real Estate.

That's BNP as in Banque Nationale Paribas not British National Party. Oops!

Shobna's off the menu

ACTRESS Shobna Gulati has dropped out of Dinnerladies at the Lyceum in October because Coronation Street wants her back. She's replaced by former Corrie regular Sue Devaney, who was in the original TV series.

Sue will be remembered as Debbie Webster in Coronation Street and as paramedic Liz Harker in Casualty.
