ASIDELINES: Exhibition on sporting great

REMEMBER the Diary's story of heel to toe racer George Littlewood - the international sporting star Sheffield has forgotten - last year?

Well, George's great, great nephew Paul Marshall has managed to get an exhibition on him at the Central Library, Surrey Street.

There are photographs, original newspaper cuttings and posters on George who found fame on both sides of the Atlantic in the second half of the 19th century.

His world record for 531 miles in 142 hours performed at the old Drill Hall, Clough Road, from March 6-11 in 1882 still stands.

"There is a lot of interest in George at the Town Hall and this is the first step in hopefully getting him honoured permanently by the council," says Paul.

He wrote the mammoth history King of the Peds which details George's achievements and those of other city athletes such as Peter Crossland.

The exhibition, outside the local studies library, is up until May 2.
