ASIDELINES: Death toll from flu pandemic

EXPERTS tell us that worries over swine flu, expected to arrive in earnest later this year, are not to be sneezed at.

But what happened the last time a flu pandemic hit the city?

Sheffield Archives have done some digging and found 173 people died in June 1918 and it got worse. In October and November there were over 1,300 deaths from Spanish Flu.

"No part of the city was spared - Attercliffe in the east and Ecclesall in the west were both badly affected," says the archives people.

Life was bad enough because until November Britain was at war. The ambulance service was overwhelmed so the fire brigade took the sick to hospital. Extra beds were opened at Lodge Moor Hospital to cope.
