ASIDELINES: A dream duo for Lost Chord

IT is a musical collaboration which will showcase two of South Yorkshire finest - but your diarist isn't breaking news that Jarvis is set to front Def Leppard.

No, Australian-born, Sheffield-based pianist David Barnard will play with Donny diva Lesley Garret in concert next month.

The pair will come together for a gig in aid of dementia charity Lost Chord, at Sheffield Hallam University's Pennine Theatre on February 4 at 7.30pm. It precedes a private dinner with Lesley at the same venue.

Tickets for the concert are 15. Available on 0114 256 5567 or at via www.arenaticketshop.co.uk

Death at the Inn

A GRIM anniversary today for one South Yorkshire pub...

It is 150 years since the Scottish nobleman Alexander, Earl of Eglington, killed a companion over a game of dice at the Angel Inn, in Misson, Doncaster.

The Earl stabbed Thomas Maddox with a sword after the session turned nasty. As you do.

He was charged with murder but, with all his money and connections, was found not guilty due to ample provocation and the case was dismissed.

The incident is reported in Kevin Turton's book A Grim Almanac Of South Yorkshire.

Get energised

TO most amateur sportsmen an energy snack means having a Mars bar and a mouthful of Lucozade.

But a cooking demo will show how to make proper energy bars next month.

Takes place at Sheffield's Weston Park as part of the Sports Lab exhibition on February 16, 6 - 8pm.
