A great day despite the weather

IT is a hard thing to face up to, particularly for a sun-worshipper like me, but I must now accept that I am a weather jinx.

An August wedding in Tuscany brought visions of stunning scenery, gorgeous food and wine, the sun blazing in a clear blue sky for the photographs.

When my old university flatmate was planning her dream nuptials in Italy I don't think it even entered her head that the weather would be anything but perfect. But maybe if she knew my history I wouldn't have got an invite.

I'm the girl who spent three consecutive years from 17 to 19 camping around France in torrential storms.

Me and my best friends remained optimistic year after year that this time it would be different - planning lazy days on the beach and balmy barbecues by the tent each night.

But each year we would be proved wrong - instead finding ourselves huddled in the cramped porch swigging warm beer before legging it through the downpours to get to the bar.

Then the main objective would be to lie in for as long as possible the next morning, thus delaying facing up to the rain once again.

The jinx even followed me to Australia, where rain and thunderstorms greeted me for the first week of my trip.

Music festivals, birthdays, special events - they've all followed the same pattern, with the Italy wedding the latest in a long line.

Thunder, lightning and torrential rain - it was the worst England could have thrown at us.

But it still didn't matter - after all, the weather was just one part of an absolutely incredible day.
