£1m aid for pit village revival

A DONCASTER village is to be targeted by a £1 million national lottery regeneration scheme.

The former pit village of Woodlands, which was originally built to house miners at Brodworth Colliery, has been included in a scheme which will see cash ploughed in over the next decade.

Lottery bosses say the figure which will be put into the area will be at least 1 million.

A similar sum will go into Thurnscoe, near Barnsley.

The areas are among the first 50 across England to benefit from the Big Local Trust programme, which is intended to help turn up to 150 urban and rural neighbourhoods into better places to live.

The targeted neighbourhoods have all been selected following extensive analysis and discussion and are all said to be places where people face social obstacles and have a history of difficulty in obtaining resources, including funding from the lottery, to help overcome them.

Vanessa White, Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for Yorkshire and The Humber, said: "The Big Local Trust is a dedicated Lottery funding stream to help people in neighbourhoods such as Woodlands and Thurnscoe to identify local issues and to develop the skills and confidence necessary to change things for the better.

"We hope that by securing funding for the long-term and by offering a commitment to providing dedicated local support, the Big Local Trust will bring lasting positive changes to Woodlands and Thurnscoe and their residents."

An independent charitable trust will be set up to run the programme and today the Big Local Trust is calling for expressions of interest from organisations who wish to apply to run it for Woodlands.

Organisations interested in becoming a trustee should get in touch by Thursday August 12. Log onto www.biglotteryfund.org.uk or call the helpline on 08454 102 030 for details of how to get involved.
