Doncaster is set to come together this morning to pay respect to servicemen and women, with Remembrance and Armistice Day events.

Tributes will be led by Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones and Civic Mayor, Cllr Paul Wray for Remembrance Day and Armistice Day.

Remembrance Sunday, will begin with a Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph on Bennethorpe from 10:45am. This will be followed by a parade to the Minster of St George, where a second service will be open to the public at 11:45am.

Services for Armistice Day will commence outside the Mansion House at 10:45am on Wednesday 11 November 2015, and the service will include a bugler playing the Last Post and Reveille and the traditional Act of Homage.

The service is available for anyone to attend, and honours servicemen and women who have lost their lives as well as those who are still serving in the armed forces. Armistice Day commemorations are to acknowledge the signing of the armistice between the Allied forces and Germany at the end of the First World War, signed at 11am on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

Civic Mayor, Cllr Paul Wray said: “The Remembrance services are an important opportunity to commemorate the servicemen and women who have sacrificed so much in the World Wars and other conflicts.

“It is important to reflect upon the ceasefire on the Western Front and remember the fallen soldiers along with those still serving today.”

Mayor Ros Jones added: “Everyone is invited to join in the Service of Remembrance at Doncaster Minster, and the Armistice Day service outside the Mansion House, to pay our respects to those who have made the greatest sacrifice imaginable for our freedom. I would encourage everybody to join in the events, either in the town centre or their local community, if they are able to do so.”

Later on 11 November, Mayor Jones will be attending an award ceremony to receive an award from the Reserve Forces & Cadets’ Association, recognising the council’s excellent work with the armed forces community.
