Doncaster theatre Cast has launched a drive to find the town’s top scriptwriting talents.
Cast, in association with Right Up Our Street, has launched Scripted, a new writing initiative which will include a season of masterclasses, script slams, readings and performances of the UK’s best new writing at Doncaster’s new £22m venue.
Script submissions are invited from new and emerging writers from across Doncaster and South Yorkshire.
‘Scripted’ is looking for pieces of no longer than 15 minutes that are ambitious and that have a distinct voice. Scripted wants to find groundbreaking new plays and nurture new and fresh voices that represent the unique energy of the region.
Works selected will be performed by a professional company on two Script Slam events taking place at Cast on March 19 and June 25. The selection panel includes Cast’s Director, Kully Thiarai, theatre director and Cast associate director Esther Richardson and Doncaster playwright, Richard Cameron (author of The Glee Club).
Alongside the Script Slam events, the Scripted season also includes script writing and character masterclasses with multi-award winning playwrights Richard Cameron (18 January) and Philip Osment (17 May), as well as an inspirational script-in-hand presentation of new play Glory Dazed by playwright Cat Jones on Wednesday 29 January.
Directed by Esther Richardson, Glory Dazed is a funny and sizzling new play about the impact of war on returning soldiers to the town, originally developed with ex-servicemen and prisoners at HMP and YOI Doncaster.
Cat Jones is an extraordinary writing talent, who burst onto the national theatre scene in 2013, following a critically acclaimed run of Glory Dazed at Soho Theatre in London.
Right Up Our Street is proud to bring the play home as part of this special evening that offers an insight into Cat’s breathtaking talent and aims to inspire other local new writers.
To submit a play please send a hard copy to: Cast, ‘Scripted’, Waterdale, Doncaster, DN1 3BU.
Deadline for 1st Script Slam (19 March) is Friday 28 February, the deadline for 2nd Script Slam (25 June) is Friday 30 May.
