A multi-million selling author who left a Doncaster mining village for the bright lights of New York is set to begin a new chapter with the unveiling of her latest book.
But Lindsey Kelk, whose chick-lit novel What A Girl Wants has just hit the shelves across the globe, still has her feet firmly on the ground, despite becoming an international bestseller.
She said: “Nothing has changed. Whenever I come back home, my mum gets the kettle on and we sit down and have a cuppa. No-one will let me get carried away with what I’ve done!”
Lindsey, who has penned 10 books, including the popular ‘I heart’ series, left behind her family home in Harworth to carve out a career in the United States, which has turned her into one of the most popular writers in the women’s literature sector.
She said: “I was given the chance to move to New York and it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that was too good to miss.”
Lindsey, aged 33, grew up in the mining village – and it was where she first discovered her love of books and writing.
She said: “I was always a big reader and I was always writing stories when I should have been doing other things.”
She followed her love through school and on to university – but, by then, the writing had become a hobby.
With designs of working as a teacher or a journalist, she put her dreams of becoming an author on hold.
She said: “It was always a passion, but it was more just for my own fun.”
But after landing a career in publishing with book giant Harper Collins, her dreams bubbled to the surface once more – and after a series of rejections for her first book, I Heart New York, she was stunned when it was accepted for publication – and it became an instant hit.
Since then she has penned a string of other best-selling novels in the series, moving to the States five years ago.
She said: “The fun part is the writing. There’s always a sense of relief when I have finished a book but then you have to watch it go off, and hope for the best.
“It still seems strange to see my books on a shelf in the supermarket – it is a bit of a dream. Even now it is surreal when I see someone reading one!”
Home is where the heart is for popular range
Lindsey’s career kicked off with her first novel I Heart New York in 2009 – and since then, her writing adventures have taken her to a string of glitzy locations around the globe.
Hollywood, Paris, Las Vegas and London have all featured in follow-up books with her latest release, What A Girl Wants, continuing the chick-lit strand she has enjoyed over the past five years.
The book tells the story of Tess Brookes, a girl with a plan forced to make a choice – should she stay in London and start her own advertising agency with her best friend and potential boyfriend Charlie? Or should she head to exciting Milan to pursue both a new career as a photographer and a new man, the enigmatic and elusive (and highly irritating) Nick? For the first time in her life, she has to choose – and face difficult decisions.
Published by Harper, the book is available now.
