Is there a real treasure lurking in the depths of your jewellery box?
As the recession bites, the value of precious metals and diamonds soar.
Values have gone up hugely as investors sink their cash into inflation-proof gold bullion and precious stones.
The jewellery passed down through generations of your family, or even your engagement ring, could be worth a lot more than you thought.
Sheffield’s Assay Office, the 238-year-old hallmarking service which runs as a non-profitmaking company, could help you find out the true value of your treasures.
It has launched a professional, branded service which will offer valuations on jewellery, watches and silverware.
One of only four remaining assay offices in the UK, it has collaborated with the Guild of Valuers and Jewellers to offer Valuation Days.
Ashley Carson, the Assay Master at Sheffield, said: “We were getting asked for valuations by our customers. They were aware of the increasing price of precious metals and the need to have their valuable appraised, documented and protected by insurance.
“The recent sharp rise in the price of precious metals has meant that an item which was valued at £6,000 a couple of years ago may be worth closer to £10,000 today – and may well be under-insured.”
Valuations will take place both at the Assay Office and jewellers’ shops. Charges start at £60.
