It is a tale of two estates which one young Sheffield artist is bringing together.

Ceramicist Emilie Taylor is preparing to delve into history as she explores the link between Derbyshire landmark Chatsworth and Sheffield’s Manor Lodge.

They might be drastically different these days, but the two are connected by the former lady of the Manor Bess of Hardwick.

For the past two months, the 32-year-old has been in Denmark, taking part in an Arts Council-funded course where she mastered the wood-burning kilns first used by potters hundreds of years ago.

Now she is fired up and ready to go in her role as artist-in-residence at both sites, researching archive materials to create a new body of work.

Emilie, of Pitsmoor, said: “I am very interested in themes of power, social mobility and matriarchy and the contemporary journeys between the two estates.”
