THE TWO Gavins are involved in exciting music projects of their own.

Gavin Magenty, who came to Shefield in 2002 to study music at university, took up directing as well as singing opera at the suggestion of his tutor.

He met Gavin Usher, who is from the Banner Cross area of Sheffield, when the latter was first violinist with Sheffield Music Services.

Gavin Magenty, who has also worked with Elemental Opera in Manchester, founded his own company, Steel Opera, and is at present working on a production of Don Giovanni. The other Gavin is the group’s musical director.

He says he wants to modernise opera and it make it more relevant to modern audiences and one idea involves writing an opera using characters from TV comedies like Friends and Frasier.

Gavin Usher, who is also busy as a freelance violinist, is setting up his own orchestra, the New Yorkshire Concert Orchestra, which has already performed some prom-style concerts at Wentworth Castle Gardens.
