Ellesmere Musical Theatre Company is back with its annual favourite, Show Stoppers.

The show is looking back at a century of the musicals, both on stage and screen.

Gillian Deutsch from the group said: “In what is a firm fixture in many people’s diaries, year after year the society successfully entertains, moves and amuses its audiences with a classic variety show, offering songs, dances and comedy from musical theatre and cinema of all eras and genres.

“This year is no different as Ellesmere takes you on a whistle-stop tour through the last 100 years of the musicals – tapping past 42nd Street and Anything Goes, reverentially recounting some wartime classics and the likes of Brigadoon, flitting through West Side Story and Phantom of the Opera before taking on many of the current crop of favourites, including Mary Poppins and Spamalot.

“The company has been rehearsing over the summer and aims to make ‘One’ singular sensation of this year’s Show Stoppers, being neither ‘too darned hot’ nor ‘frozen’.

“There really is something for everyone, with the audience sure to come out singing some favourite tunes.”

The company has been entertaining Sheffielders since 1947, when it was based in Ellesmere Road Methodist Chapel.

Show Stoppers will be at the theatre on Surrey Street from Thursday (October 2) to Saturday at 7.15pm nightly, and there’s also a 2.15pm matinee on Saturday.
