Students are set to put off essays and raid their loans as Meadowhall brings back its popular shop in – with a world record attempt thrown in as well.

Thousands of shopping-savvy savers have already signed up to the event in which students from across universities, sixth forms and colleges all hunt for a bargain.

As well as the extra discounts, there will be a chance to break a world record as Capital FM DJ, Adam O’Neill hopes to attempt to grab the world’s largest selfie with the help of scores of students.

Benedict Tetzlaff-Deas, aged 18, of Norton Lees Square, Norton, attended last year.

He said: “I was really impressed with the whole set- up last time around, plenty of shops had extra offers on.

“It’s nice to get the place to yourself. I found it really cool that it was full of people my own age.”

Benedict is heading off to Leeds Trinity University in September after a stint at Sheffield College, and he has already signed up for this year’s event.

“I’m looking forward to it, I’ll be skint for a while afterwards but it will be worth it!

“It’s good Meadowhall throw on events like this for young people.”

The event is to take place on Thursday, April 23 from 6pm until 9pm for registered students.

The centre is celebrating its 25th birthday and bosses are hoping this years bash will be bigger and better than ever.

Darren Pearce, director of Meadowhall Shopping Centre, said: “Sheffield students really have some impressive creative flare when it comes to fashion, so the event is perfect for the Sheffield crowd of today and keeping their finger on the pulse when it comes to style.”

Mall chief Darren is also urging student challengers to take him on at retro games Pac Man and Space Invaders.

He said: “I’m confident to say my skills on retro games are still pretty sharp, none of these touch screen consoles or apps for me so I feel my practice over the years will see me in good stead!”

Meadowhall is also celebrating St George’s Day which falls on the same day.

Any student called George, Georgina or Georgia with identification to prove it will be able to claim a free juice cocktail from Boost Juice bar.
