Do you believe in ghosts? If not you might think again thanks to a new book chronicling spooky stories reported in Sheffield’s Victorian newspapers.

David Clarke delved deep into the archives to uncover incredible reports including a woman who died ‘from fright’.

He has tracked down death certificates to back up the stories, most of which have remained hidden for more than a century.

David, a former journalist on The Star, was originally inspired to investigate ghost stories by his grandmother, and is pleased years of investigating have now culminated in the book.

He said: “I have combined accounts of first hand experiences with items of folklore and superstition to produce a snapshot of the supernatural beliefs that circulated in Victorian society.”

Scared to Death and other ghost stories from Victorian Sheffield will be available soon, priced £12.95, from The Star shop on York Street.

The author is also to give a talk about ghost stories at the Upper Chapel, 45 Surrey Street, at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 31, as part of the Off The Shelf festival. Call 0114 249 6000 for tickets, priced £5 or £4.
