But on Valentine’s Day, it’s time to up the stakes to ensure he’s thinking about you all night long - and seductive lingerie is your secret weapon.

Take your cue from First Lady Michelle Obama, who reportedly splurged £32,000 in one shopping spree at luxury brand Agent Provocateur recently. Now that’s dedication to your Valentine ensemble!

Turn your bedroom into a school for seduction with lingerie to fall in love with.

DEVILISH DESIGNS

RED alert! Scarlet tones were undoubtedly the biggest colour trend on the catwalks for autumn/winter fashions and the craze has now translated to what lies beneath.

If you want to feel empowered, energised and bold, this striking colour gives you sex kitten status in an instant.

Look your most ravishing with the right red - shades can vary from pink-tinged raspberry to orange-hued tomato, so pick the tone that complements your skin colour. If you have a warm colouring, stick to yellow-based reds, or wear blue-based if your skin tones are cooler.

PRETTY PASTELS

GET set for a summer of sorbet-inspired fashion hues. Rose, lemon, mint and icy blue will be all over the high street but you can tap into the trend earlier with pastel smalls.

Lace is the perfect fabric for flaunting such delicate colours. And if you can’t decide which pastel to plump for, make like the catwalks and take the pick ‘n’ mix approach, pairing different shades together.

KITSCH CUTIES

SWEET, innocent vintage looks about right now. Think retro sweetheart references, heart prints, cheeky embellishments and lashings of pink.

And those vintage shapes are great for boosting your figure and your confidence. He doesn’t need to know, but high waist briefs are the perfect pull-you-in for tummies.

DARK DELIGHTS

FOR true boudoir style, sometimes only black will do. Sultry and seductive, opulent lingerie in satin, silk or lace is sure to get his pulse racing.

If an all-black after dark ensemble feels a little too obvious, though, try deep navy or purple for a more subtle look.

Don’t let body issues ruin the bedroom ambience. A sleek, black basque or babydoll, layered with a black silk gown, can look just as sexy as a skimpy lingerie set.

Buying for your beloved

Listen up, bewildered men of Britain! Before you buy your partner lingerie which will go straight in the underwear drawer, take note of these tips from lingerie brand Chantelle’s fit expert Sue Gordon:

nDo your research. Have a look through your partner’s drawer and jot down what bra and bottom size she wears - and also what brands.

nMake a note of what colours and styles she prefers. Does she have padded or sheer bras?

nWhen you go shopping, ask for help. Tell the sales assistant what size and brands your partner tends to wear, as this will give her a good idea on sizing - all brands fit differently. And mention what styles your partner usually wears.

nOpt for a chemise or cami top if you don’t feel totally confident choosing a bra.

nEnsure you get a gift receipt so bras can be refunded or exchanged.

The most important thing to remember is that if she doesn’t own sexy lingerie, she won’t feel comfortable if you buy it for her. Choose something you know will boost her confidence rather than diminish it.
