Designer handbag addicts, read this and weep...
A stunning selection of 18 iconic Hermès handbags from a private collection are to be auctioned at Bonhams in Knightsbridge.
A similar sale of 64 pristine Hermès bags at Bonhams in May realised £562,750.
The latest collection to go under the hammer belong to an un-named but clearly wealthy woman who admits to having a passion for handbags since childhood, when she watched her mother gleefully open a succession of Hermès trademark orange boxes.
A red crocodile Birkin, the style named after British actress Jane Birkin, is expected to sell for around £30,000. Birkin had a chance meeting with the chairman of Hermès, and explained she couldn’t find a leather weekend bag she liked.
A mini Kelly bag in miel crocodile is estimated at around £20,000. The bag was named after actress Grace Kelly, who in 1956 had just become Princess of Monaco and was seen carrying the original to hide her pregnancy. Photographs of the young starlet appeared all over the world.
