Champagne ale at beer festival

BEER fans are celebrating with champagne the 20th anniversary of the Rotherham Real Ale and Music Festival.

But there will be no corks popping - as it is a type of yeast rather than fizz, and has been used to create a celebratory ale that is so strong, at 16 per cent proof, it will be available from the bar in third-pint measures only.

Richard Hancock, head brewer at the Wentworth brewery, who developed the beer, said: “Beer festivals often give brewers a chance to experiment with ingredients. We felt adding champagne yeast to mark the 20th anniversary in a new type of ale was a fitting tribute.”

The Wentworth anniversary ale is one of 236 varieties available during Baa’s of Steel, the 20th Rotherham Real Ale and Music festival at Magna between February 29 and March 3.
