I WAS very surprised to read the letter from Bryan Lodge (April 30) in response to Ray Greaves (April 4). First and foremost, yes there has been a £135m regeneration project which is underway in Birley but it was long overdue - by at least 20 years.
He states that every council house is being modernised across the ward. Maybe, but it hasn't yet. Big difference there, between the result and the 'draft'.
He goes on to state that there has been major improvements in the schools.
Forgive me f
or being a little negative but surely the schools are part of the 'education pot' and nothing to do with the actual wards they serve. Besides, it's not as though that necessarily is giving back to the whole community.
My final point concerns his comment about environmental improvements at Birley Moor Road. In his election literature it was stated that all gennels have been cleared of litter. I would be more than happy to provide him with photographs showing that this is simply not the case.
It seems that his entire stock of answers is based on things that have been occurring over the last decade.
Investments in Birley Community College for one, the Birley Spa Bathouse and the new library, but he seems to suggest in his letter that these are new things. They're not. When will crime be tackled in the area? When will run down buildings be brought up to scratch? Instead, crime is ignored or tied up in so much red tape that people are disheartened.
How about some planting or investment in the carnival or community activities for all ages? What about not ripping out the flower beds in the first place?
Rudy Guliani had it right in New York: tackle the little things, clean the graffiti off, tidy up the streets, and it will improve everything.
