THE council should be aiming to reduce the whole city's carbon footprint, not just its own emissions. (Council aim to be trailblazers in caring for the environment, The Star Monday September 17).
They are making some people's houses more energy efficient, but the Decent Homes programme should have gone much further and so far they have not attempted to help home owners.
Introducing Quality Contracts would force bus companies to run better
services and keep their fares down. This would encourage people to use their cars less.
The Council aim to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill by only 5% and are burning waste in the incinerator to heat buildings. Cutting the amount of waste produced in the first place and recycling even more would be better. We need more incentives for businesses to reduce packaging and better recycling services.
New "green" school buildings? Knocking down schools such as Wisewood and rebuilding them produces far more carbon dioxide than refurbishing them, and fewer schools overall means longer school runs.
The Council is responsible for running the whole city. So let's see a bit more real leadership so that Sheffield can become a truly low-carbon city.
