ST LUKE'S - MORE OF YOUR VIEWS: Where better than Graves Park?

ONE measure of civilised society is how it looks after its people when they come into this life, another is how it looks after its people who live on the margins of society. And another is how it looks after its people who are to depart this life.
We have been very fortunate in Sheffield to have St Luke's. A hospice which pioneered care for the terminally ill. How strange therefore that such an organisation should be receiving opposition from a small section of our community, for its proposal to improve facilities to give better care for the terminally ill.

There has been much misinformation, particularly about St Luke's plans to move to Norton Nurseries and also about how that great benefactor JG Graves may have viewed these. The most authoritative body to give a view on JG Graves, and the one best placed to comment on how he would have viewed the proposal for enhancing Norton Nurseries through locating St Luke's there, is the JG Graves Trust.

The trustees have made it quite clear that, in their view, he would have supported the proposal. Now the Graves Trust has signalled its acceptance of the hospice plan, is it not time for all of us to support St Luke's and stop this bickering? We need to give our encouragement to one of Sheffield's most caring institutions and the hundreds of donors and volunteers who give freely of their time.

Most importantly we should not lose sight of those desperately sick people who use – and need – St Luke's Hospice. They are the ones who will suffer most if this worthwhile and essential plan is delayed.

Those facing life-threatening illness deserve to have access to the most beautiful environ-ment we can provide. What better place than Graves Park?
Bishop Jack Nicholls and Master Cutler Gordon W Bridge

WELL done to Paul License for his article on Graves Park and St Lukes.

We cannot allow this to happen – the trustees of Graves Park should think again. As for selling off our parkland and green spaces, the council has already done this in Green Oak Park, Totley. Alright it isn't as big a piece of land as in Graves Park but to my mind this leaves it open to sell off land elsewhere in Sheffield. So please leave our parks and green spaces alone.

I read with interest and agreement Paul License's article concerning the park. While I am a supporter of St Luke's and will continue to be, I don't agree with the proposals for the Norton Nurseries.

All St Luke's have given the council is a legitimate reason to hide behind. I believe the council would love for these proposals to go through.

Every park in Sheffield has a piece of land which 'could' be hived off.

I am amazed that this topic is still being discussed! It should be perfectly clear to any reasonable person (and we should hope that the Bishop and Master Cutler can be classed as such) that Graves Park (which includes the Nursery) simply cannot be used for this prurpose. The park was bought by a far sighted individual so that the land wouldn't be used for development by one particular generation and therefore lost to their children and grandchildren.

It's time for St Lukes to stop spending vast amounts of charitable donations on a project which just can't succeed. Spend some time and effort on looking at the perfect site at Norton Aerodrome. That site is in Sheffield, opposite a tram stop, the owners have said it is available, and its improvement will be a benefit to the city.

These two charleys Messrs Bridge and Nicholls are just so ignorant if they think it is just 'bickering'.

As one of the trustees of JG Graves Trust, Mr Bridge knows full well that they have absolutely no jurisdiction over this matter so why does he keep trotting it out?

If The Bishop is so gullible as to believe everything he hears from the other charley or SLH, he should take a trip up to Norton Nurseries to see the (non) dereliction with his own eyes. Then he'll know the meaning of 'misinformation'.

Appropriately, Bishop Jack seems to have taken to receiving messages from beyond the grave.

Might the £5,000 donation from J G Graves Trust (Trustee one Gordon Bridge, Master Cutler)to the Sheffield Cathedral Development Fund mean that he isn't quite as free thinking as he would like us Sheffielders to think?

I am not aware of the existence of "The JG Graves Trust"
Perhaps they are refering to "The JG Graves Charitable Trust"?

Would you not expect such persons of authority to argue from a position of knowledge rather than ignorance?

Anyone reading the letter from Bishop Jack and The Master Cutler should understand that the Master Cutler is a also trustee of the JG Graves Charitable Trust and that that same trust has made charitable donations to the church.

How naughty of Bishop Jack Nicholls and Master Cutler Gordon W Bridge to send this letter to The Star.

"There has been much misinformation....The most authoritative body to give a view on JG Graves...is the JG Graves Trust....Now the Graves Trust has signalled its acceptance of the hospice plan, is it not time for all of us to support St Luke's and stop this bickering?"

Can I just point out the VERY HUGE MISLEADING INFORMATION in the letter.

JG Graves Trust and the Graves Trust are seperate entities. They are not connected at all. The Graves Trustees are all the city councillors and they have DEFINATELY NOT signalled their acceptance of the hospice plans.

FURTHER MORE......Master Cutler Gordon W Bridge should know better as he is a Trustee of the JG Graves Charitable Trust and he should know that that Charity has no say in this matter!!!! Shame on you!!!!!

On what planet do Gordon Bridge and Bishop Jack Live?
Presumably one that picks up messages from beyong the grave.
Most of what I wanted to say is included in the comments above, however if the worthies think that opposition to their little scheme is limited to a few they are well wide of the mark. THREE opinion polls have shown up to 86% of sheffield people are opposed to the hospice relocating onto public parkland. Furthermore this was despite the missinformation that the hospice continue to pump into the public arena. Missinformation much like the letter from Bishop Jack and the Master Cutler.
THese guys need to get real. They need to read public outrage in the papers and most of all they need to read the Charity Commission letter on the subject, and not become part of the hospice's propoganda machine.

Residents of Reading, Manchester and Devon then Michael Palin and now Bishop Jack and The Master Cutler all on Goliath's 'side'.
David only has a 'small section of the community' (80% of the ordinary Sheffielders - owners of the park) and The Charity Commission on his 'side'!
Then 'What better place than Graves Park'? - Norton Aerodrome overlooking green fields & open countryside may fit the bill!!!

Don't these guys read the papers?

The Charity Commission have now arrived on the scene and cut through all the lies and missleading information. It now seems St Lukes Charity shop windows can be sold as fiction in W H Smiths.

The Bishop and Master Cutler must be the only people left in Sheffield who still think this stupid scheme to build in a public park still has legs.

Give it up now. St Lukes have squandered a fortune trying to grab land belonging to another charity. Throwing more money and more lies into the mix won't alter the Charities Act.

Take a trip to Norton Aerodrome. It is just up the road.

Bishop Jack Nicholls and Master Cutler, and JG Graves Charitable Trustee, Gordon Wilson Bridge, do you have no shame?

Our Master Cutler has already shown his colours, but for a senior member of the church to put his name to such a letter is beyond belief. "Opposition from a small section of our community" - Either you are extremely foolish in putting your name to this letter, having being misled, and not in full posession of the facts, or you have done this knowingly. I hope, being in your position, it is the former.

Are you so arrogant to believe that your voices count more than those of hundreds of thousands of Sheffielders?

Lets hope that either of these two look at these comments and come back with a few replies .....
