TUCKED away in a small corner close to the new Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster is the old site of RAF Doncaster.
When the South Yorkshire Aviation Museum moved into the premises a few years ago from its original site at Firbeck, near Maltby, the area was given a new lease of life.

While I was there recently, a group of cub scouts were being taken around. All the aeroplanes, helicopters and mechanical electrical wizardry had them wide-eyed and in awe of the ingenious ideas that Britons were once famous for.

However, just as striking was the wartime working-class household displays – it certainly made them think. It shows how resourceful their great- and great-, great-grandparents were, with very little thrown away and a use found for almost everything.

Contrast that with the mentality of the public in general today and it makes you realise just how great our forefathers were.
