Martin Oxley (August 14) wrote that Georgia has to take the bitter pill of defeat at the hands of Russia because it supported George W Bush in Iraq. The logic of this is that if Russia decided to bomb Britain because Tony Blair also supported the invasion of Iraq, we would deserve to be punished in the same way.
Sheffield Stop the War Coalition is continuing to campaign against all these wars, whoever starts them for whatever reason, because the innocent who had nothing to do with the policies of their leaders are the ones who suffer death, maiming and destruction.

We shall be lobbying Gordon Brown's political rally in Manchester on September 20 to tell him to bring our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan for a start and to refuse to send any troops or missile or anti-missile sites to countries that want to follow war policies, including Georgia.

The urgent need now is to build coalitions of the peaceful majorities who want to tackle the real problems – poverty, crime, food and fuel scarcity and global warming – and not spend millions on wars.

Nick Howard, Norfolk Park Avenue, Sheffield 2

Rodgers,

SHEFFIELD 27/08/2008 14:01:21
Where are the peaceful majority. It seems that the Majority are either at war with each other, Or they are countries with their own internal struggles. Most of these caused by Britain and America. Maybe we had better watch our backs because we are threatening far too many countries for our own good. As for Russia. Anyone knowing the history would agree that Russia did just the same as we did with the Faulkland Islands. They defended two small regions that want to be under Russian Jurisdiction. Georgia was the first to fire a shot in this skirmish. As for Georgia, The President of this place is a puppet of the West and also disliked by his own people. He had to create a distraction.
