Re 'Keep our safe pathway open,' The Star, April 22. Part of the recent very expensive modernisation of Sheffield railway station, largely at Government expense, was the construction of the new pedestrian over-bridge, providing a walkway between the Sheffield Station/Hallam University tram stop, the railway station, the Hallam University, and beyond.
This over-bridge is used by large numbers of pedestrians, many of them not being rail travellers, and the city council should tell Mr Shoveller, the director of the new East Midlands Train Franchise, that the over-bridge is an essential, popular and
well used amenity for rail travellers and pedestrians.
What do you think? Post your comment below.I believe that if the East Midlands train franchisee and other train franchisees who use the Sheffield station thoroughly examined the alleged problem of fare dodging they would find, if it actually exists, it is largely due to over-crowded, under-staffed trains and stations.
The present arrangement whereby the Sheffield station is managed by the East Midlands franchisee on behalf of its competitors – other train franchisees – is very unsatisfactory and in the best interests of all concerned, including the many users of the over bridge, its management should be transferred to Network Rail.
