I was shocked and dismayed at the statistics you published in Saturday's Star concerning motorists fined for using mobile phones while driving.
Firstly, a reduction from 3978 to 3109 fines in year-on-year comparison is not 'slightly down' mathematically and this description would not attract the highest mark at GCSE level.

Secondly, I am hardly impressed that in the whole of South Yorkshi
re the Police managed to fine just 3109 in 12 months. 'Eight drivers a day', screams your headline - surely you meant to write "ONLY 8 per day".

For me that's a PC (instead of me walking the dog) on Psalter Lane (or any other road in South Yorkshire) at 4.30 through to 6pm (or any other time, for that matter) on any day of the week.

So how can you allow the statement: "The offence is one of the key priorities for South Yorkshire Police"? Finding only eight per day is pathetic. Heaven help us if this issue is one of their key priorities.

Those people on the phone that we all see day-in-day-out know now why they can do so with impunity.

Reading the linked document (www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article3850621.ece) explains the situation better as regards resources made available by the Police on 'key priorities'.

Can we have some PC's back on the beat, please?

Anti-merger message clear
After the local elections its plain to now see both communities don't want the merger of Wisewood and Myers Grove schools.

Alf Meade lost last year, Robert MacDonald lost this time, add to this Veronica Hardstaff lost last year in Walkley. Both Veronica Hardstaff and Alf Meade were candidates for Walkley and Stanninton this year but failed again.

Hillsborough has always been a stronghold for Labour but not with the sham merger that no-one wants. Voters got rid of the councillors who have not listened to its communities.

Further, if the merger goes ahead Malin Bridge will be traffic gridlocked at peak times. This is from the council's own traffic impact report.

There's no falling rolls and Wisewood is full yet again - and has had to turn pupils away.

There is only one solution to all this and that is build a new school for Myers, refurbish Wisewood and create a 14-19 centre on the Myers site.

The proposal group could work with Save Our Community Schools and both schools could work side by side. This would be a great thing for our children and great for their education in the NW area.

So come on set the balls in motion, Sheffield Council.

Games age ratings apply to everyone

I READ the article 'New computer game stolen from teenage boy' (May 2) with some deal of distress.
