THE letter (May 9) by Steven Strutt included an example of poetic eloquence by his daughter Lucy which stated everything that is without a doubt, the real embodiment of Sheffielders' feelings on the landmark Tinsley Cooling towers.
They are not just a geographical feature, but a historical one.

It marks everything that makes the people of Sheffield who we are.

If Newcastle can be landmarked by the Angel of the North, and Milton Keynes can have a herd of stone cows, surely we should be allowed to keep the towers which every Sheffielder who travels down the M1 marks the start or finish to every journey.

The towers are our history, our heritage and have been our skyline for many years.

They deserve to be left alone. How else will we know we are home?
David Smedley, Sheffield 5
