I read in The Star (Oct 4) that Coun John Gilding, leader of Rotherham Council's Conservative group, has expressed disappointment with Jamie Oliver's TV programme The Ministry of Food. He also appears to have criticised Mr Oliver for making the people of Rotherham look stupid.
Well, as a neutral observer who does not wish to ingratiate himself with the folk of Rotherham, I totally disagree.

It seems to me that Mr Oliver is making a genuine, sympathetic and warm-hearted attempt to teach very basic cooking skills to people who have never been taught how to cook and who do not understand the benefits of avoiding excessive consumption of junk food.

I do not know what attempts to do the same have been made by Mr Gilding personally and it would be interesting to know.

I have to say however that I could do with a bit less of the foul language from Jamie.

Rodgers,

SHEFFIELD 10/10/2008 17:25:05
The advice given by this man is just common sense. I find Jamie oliver to be an untidy, Badly dressed, Bad mouthed, Unhealthy looking man. I would hate to eat some of his recpes, He took the opportunity to jump on the band waggon. But yet he is also unfit. Maybe he should encourage people to take more excercise. It is lack of this that is a problem not just what we eat. Many of us were brought up on junk food but we are not fat. Schools no longer have cross country running or other similar sports, P.E was a regular session at school that we could never escape though we tried to. Now the kids just take a day off school and sit at home in front of the T.V or P.C Games console. We have become an idle society. Even fat people have started using wheel chairs now.
