DONCASTER Grand Theatre Fabric Preservation Society is continuously approached by supporters of the Save the Grand campaign and others for access to the Grand Theatre Doncaster which will have been in the dark for 14 years at the end of October.
The society always refers anyone making these enquiries to the owners. However, as an alternative, the society is presently suggesting that anyone wishing to explore a beautiful listed Victorian performance venue should consider attending the heritage open day at the Grand Theatre Leeds on Sunday, September 14 from 10.30am until 4pm.

There will be backstage tours to learn about life as a Victorian theatregoer. The public can have a go at lighting the stage, tread the boards and enjoy a moment of fame.

There will also be a unique opportunity to record your memories about the theatre (and in Doncaster there will be numerous people who have many) and help to create an on-line archive of oral histories ensuring that stories of theatre-goers to this grand old beauty are shared with generations to come.

It is a great pity that we are not now doing this in Doncaster but, the campaing to restore the Grand Theatre still goes on.

Ray Nortrop, on behalf of Doncaster Grand Theatre Fabric Preservation Society
