IN response to Eve Harrington's letter regarding the prospects for the Crucible Theatre, which is due to reopen at the end of next year, I feel obliged to write in support of the Crucible and the local arts scene in general.
Sheffield has been incredibly lucky in recent years, with the re-fit of the City Hall, the continued success of the Arena and the new Carling Academy.
I think in any economic downturn it's fair to say that people want escapism from everyday life,
even if for just a couple of hours.
As with lots of theatres up and down the country, both old and new, I believe most people would agree the Crucible had reached its 'sell-by' date in terms of its fabric. It is only fair to praise the Crucible's chief exec, Angela Galvin and the board of Sheffield Theatres for having the guts to raise the capital needed.
In recent years audience numbers have more than trebled and I fully believe what we are seeing at the Crucible will prove a future success story.
