IN AN area of South Yorkshire which inspired Sir Walter Scott to write Ivanhoe, I recently took a walk from Conisbrough to Doncaster. Shortly after having passed through picturesque Sprotbrough and up on to the old disused railway track bed Trans Pennine Trail, look, ing down from the viaduct, I was most surprised to witness a heavily laden boat chugging down the still waters of the River Don, 100ft below the Don Bridge (opened 1961) which carries the very busy A1 M Doncaster bypass.
I later found out that the boat, along with three loaded pans of stone, was on its way from the Lafarge quarry at Cadeby to Doncaster. In this day and age of environmental challenges, Castleford-based Hargreaves Canal Transport Services should be congratulated, for this contract is to transport 300,000 tonnes of stone to a land reclamation and building site. Just think how many heavy lorries this contract is keeping off the road! In the future and whenever possible, let us see more freight carried on our canals and navigable rivers.
