I AM writing in response to your report on the recent protest by the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) outside the Showroom and would like to take this opportunity to give an accurate account of the matter.
It is true that in August we dismissed Chris Lockwood as member of our bar staff, but this was for entirely legitimate reasons and in line with Employment Law. The IWW claim that this was an 'illegal dismissal' is unsubstantiated and not true.
The IWW statement as reported in your article (Oct 2) that this employee was dismissed due to his membership of the IWW is also untrue. In fact we had no knowledge of this prior to terminating his employment.
Our organisation has recently undergone a staff restructuring to improve the operation of our facilities at the Showroom and Workstation which was subject to almost nine months of staff consultation followed by retraining of employees to move into new roles. We have always considered staff and taken their views into account where possible during this period of transformation.
As an organisation we are keen to invest in the development and best performance of all of our staff to ensure a high standard of service and visitor experience to all our customers.
