Autistic children need more help

THE recent headline in The Star regarding Regan, who has autism, escaping from his school for the third time, only highlights the desperate need for children with special needs to be placed in a special school.
These schools have staff who are specifically trained in special needs and therefore have the expertise, knowledge and understanding in how to deal with these children.

Teachers in mainstream have hardly, if any, training in special needs, therefore, a lot of special needs children in such schools are often misunderstood.

The pace of the curriculum nowadays is too fast for them, and they just get further and further behind.

More worryingly, the council's proposal for changing SEN funding linked to statements means that even more special needs children will end up in main stream, as special school places are reduced.

These vulnerable children will be receiving an 'education on the cheap.'

I urge every parent who this will affect to write to their MP immediately, voicing their concerns.
