I AM writing in response to letters from Kate Dommet (Sep 24), and Jane Thomas (Sep 23) who attempt to misrepresent what the Liberal Democrat council is trying to do to improve the way equalities are delivered in the organisation.
We recognise that as one of Sheffield's largest employers and service providers, the council must set high standards for others to follow. The Lib Dems value and celebrate Sheffield's diversity, and we want to ensure that equality and inclusiveness a
re embedded within every department and strategic policy rather than be confined to just one unit in the Town Hall.
If you look at any effective modern organisation, including, they deliver equalities by having the whole organisation sign up to it. By moving in the same direction we can deliver things more effectively and at a lower cost to the local taxpayer. I'm concerned that Labour (one of your correspondents is a failed Labour PPC, the other delegate for Sheffield Central at Labour's conference) seem to be opposed to this.
Coun David Baker, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader of Sheffield City Council
