SHE was four feet tall, and maybe eight years old.
Sent to buy milk or bread, she had to cross Abbeydale Road and knew if you pressed the button, the traffic would stop. So she did.
The cyclist was mid-20s, maybe 11 stone, doing about 25mph as I passed him on the slope down past Mother of God Chur
ch, approaching the pedestrian controlled crossing where I had stopped for her.
Being so small, she was unaware of him speeding down on the nearside of the traffic queueing behind me, the same line that prevented him from seeing her.
But he was visible in my left hand door mirror, furiously looming larger, totally intent on ignoring the red light, still pedalling, not slowing.
By now she was level with my truck's front right hand wing, he maybe three/four cars behind. Each in total ignorance of the other.
In desperation I sounded my horn. Mercifully she stopped and glared at me from the front of my bonnet, as he flashed by, speed unabated, the lights still on red.
She reached the pavement safely as he sped on in total ignorance of how close his pre-meditated lawlessness had come to making him a child killer.
At 8.17am on Thursday, June 19.
I thanked God and drove to work.
